This issue of The Crystal News is dedicated to the Black women and men who made history by achieving incredible feats in all walks of life and those who did so by simply surviving the horrors of systemic racism, hatred, jealousy and greed. During this pandemic, even the most obtuse people have seen the evidence of continuing racial disparities in this country. Scholarship Funds Established for Mary Louise Zeno Carter
and Meshach Taylor!
The family of social worker Mary Louise Zeno Carter (1913-2006) has established scholarship funds in their honor to provided needed scholarships at St. Sabina Academy. The family and friends of actor Meshach Taylor (1947-2014), have established scholarship funds in their honor to provided needed scholarships at Florida A&M University (FAMU). I am excited about both of these scholarships. Anyone who knows me knows that I was raised by my grandmother. My siblings and other family members look forward to helping children attend the school that helped her raise us, St. Sabina Academy... I am also quite proud to have known gifted actor Meshach Taylor, who, like me, was a fan and supporter of our Alma Mater, FAMU. What people outside of certain circles don't know, is that Meshach Taylor was a humble humanitarian a big brother to everyone he met. I hope you will support either or both of these scholarships if and when you can. Thanks!
Mary Louise Zeno Carter (1913 - 2006) was a dutiful wife and mother, an intelligent, civic-minded and hard-working woman, a meticulous homemaker, a generous caregiver and a dedicated social worker for the Illinois Department of Public Aid. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Born in Louisiana, Carter moved with her family to Chicago when she was a little girl. She attend Phillips High School where she met her husband, the late Carneil Carter, Sr. After raising two children of their own, the couple took on the challenge of raising their deceased daughter's four children, the youngest being me. My grandmother was an active member of St. Sabina Church, and served as Treasurer of her neighborhood block club and Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America. She also welcomed into her home any relative that needed a place to stay for a night, a weekend, or a while.
Meshach Taylor (1947-2014) was an Emmy-nominated actor, best known for his role as Anthony Bouvier on the sitcom Designing Women, and for his portrayal of Hollywood Montrose, a flamboyant window dresser in the Mannequin films. He played Sheldon Baylor on the sitcom Dave's World, and appeared as the recurring character Alastair Wright, the social studies teacher and later school principal, on the sitcom, Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. In 1996, Taylor hosted his own series The Urban Gardener with Meshach Taylor, and in 1998, he hosted Meshach Taylor's Hidden Caribbean. He was last seen in a recurring role on Criminal Minds. Taylor married actress Bianca Ferguson in 1983. He had four children, three with Bianca and one from a previous marriage. Taylor was a devoted husband and father, a supporter of FAMU and a mentor to many people in and outside of the entertainment industry.
