FXW Presents Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

ISPC Helps Women Hold Up the Sky

The International Service Project Committee (ISPC) of the Century City Alumnae Chapter of (CCAC) Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc is encouraging everyone in the Los Angeles area to visit the Skirball Museum's exhibit, Women Hold Up Half the Sky, on view now through May 20, 2012. The CCAC ISPC, Co-Chaired by Carlene Davis and Billie Davis, held a gathering at the museum on January 21, 2012, to talk about it's connection to the women's movement and their two year mentoring project with Amagezi Germaaanyi Youth Association. The interactive exhibition, inspired by the critically acclaimed book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, featured several sections of art, videos, audio records and photographs. Visitors can leave well wishes for women they know and those they do not. In addition to specific international projects, CCAC ISPC seeks to expand awareness of women's issue globally. Committee member T'Keyah Crystal Keymah says, "The exhibit is profound. It shows how much needs to be done for women ...and then how much can be accomplished when we join hands with our sisters around the world."

BEING POSITIVE ABOUT AIDS

December 1 is World AIDS Day and activists around the world are reminding us to get tested and to always be aware of our status. Despite more than twenty years of HIV/AIDS awareness activism, there is still a harsh stigma associated with the disease that attacks the immune system of those stricken. Being HIV positive is no longer a death sentence and it hasn't been for a long time. HIV / AIDS can be very successfully managed with consistent treatment. Getting tested can be a scary prospect, but not getting tested can be deadly. Starting this month, pledge to: 1 - Know your status; 2 - Avoid infection (or infecting others) by carefully and consistently using prophylactic protection, using clean needles, and knowing your status / Manage your illness with consistent treatment and an optimistic attitude; 3 - Advocate making the treatment of AIDS more affordable; 4 - Treat people with HIV / AIDS like people; 5 - Discuss your status (and theirs) with your partners; 6 - Encourage your friends and family to know their status and to take care of themselves; 7 - Spread Awareness / Spread Love / Spread Optimism / Spread Life!!

AAHU WANTS YOU

The Black AIDS Institute is accepting applications for its flagship training and capacity building program, the African American HIV University (AAHU) Community Mobilization College (CMC) 2012 class. Aimed at strengthening organizational and individual capacity to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Black communities, AAHU CMC is a comprehensive training and internship fellowship program. The program is designed to decrease stigma and misperception and increase the engagement of the Black community in HIV prevention, advocacy and treatment services. By the end of AAHU CMC, organizations and their Fellows will be stewards of a living, breathing mobilization campaign which they have visualized, cultivated, and shepherded.

Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. The Institute's Mission is to stop the AIDS pandemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing Black institutions and individuals in efforts to confront HIV. The Institute interprets public and private sector HIV policies, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance, disseminates information and provides advocacy mobilization. WALKER GETS AWARD

Booz Allen engineering and operations consultant Lavern Adams Walker (center) was among the 2011 recipients of the "Women of
Color in Technology Award." This is a national award that recognizes and honors the exceptional achievements of distinguished women of color in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The award winners are women of color who are role models,

have attained high levels of responsibilities, and are paving the way and making a true difference in the field of technology. The awards were bestowed during the 2011 National Women of Color STEM Conference, held in Dallas, Texas, November 3-5, 2011.

TBAAL GETS T'KEYAH STARTED

When Curtis King invited T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh to be part of The Black Academy of Art & Letters (TBAAL)'s 2011-2012 season, she was honored and inspired. She was honored to finally have the chance to perform at such an important theatrical institution. She was inspired because the show King invited her to perform was not yet written. "I'd spoken to Mr. King last year and mentioned a couple of ideas I had for new shows. He called me back later and said he wanted to book "Don't Get Me Started" for this season. I told him I still hadn't written it, but he assured me that I'd get it done in time." Keymáh had been contemplating the show for several years, but other projects kept it on the back burner. "There were so many issues that I wanted to put in the show that choosing which to include was a challenge." As is her custom, the versatile actress uses comedy, characters and music to lambast, lament and lampoon a great number of issues including poverty, corporate greed, the prison industrial complex, healthcare, the plight of teachers, and more. Student Exchange Program for SoCal Youth

Mothers for Africa the Nana Sekyiaabea Foundation is seeking high achieving high school students to travel to Ghana for a student exchange program. Students will live in an off campus dormitory, while studying international trade and commerce. Students will travel to historical landmarks and explore the beauty of Ghana; in addition to learning about the history of the country. Accommodations will include three meals a day, plus room and board. At the end of the program students will be asked to host their new Ghanaian partners in the U.S. to continue cultivating their relationships. They will be exposed to a field that most know little about. This is the opportunity of a life time!

How to enter: You must live in the Altadena, Pasadena, Los Angeles and Inglewood areas of Southern California; submit a copy of last two report cards (at least a “C” average) and submit an essay on the topic: “International Trade and Commerce in the African Diaspora”. Students must be between the ages of 15 and 18 years old. The essay must be typed minimum 500 words, typed by the student. If selected the winners must go through an oral interview process with members of Mothers for Africa Executive board. New Black TV Series Pilot - Pass the word

Asha May, her mentor Debbie Allen, Idris Elba and Lance Gross have created the TV series Milk + Honey. Idris and the Brown Paper Dolls company (Chicagoans and Howard U, FAMU & Spelman, grads Dana Gills, Asha Kamali May, and Jeanette McDuffie) have been working on this series for over 3 years. The show was created to showcase diverse images of women of color that are rarely seen on the big or small screen, and also to create more opportunities for black actors. The "Milk + Honey" scripted series will soon be seen on all platforms and is looking to get picked up by a TV network. Gala Tribute for ETA Founder

T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh will be on hand at ETA Creative Arts Foundation's annual fundraising gala on Saturday, September 10, 2011 to help honor co-founder Abena Joan Brown. After 40 years as president and producer of eta Creative Arts Foundation, Brown is stepping down as president. On March 1, 2011, Phillip Thomas was promoted to the position of president/CEO of the non-profit organization, one of the oldest and most prominent African American cultural institutions in the city of Chicago.

Keymáh got her start in one of ETA's long running productions, Okoro Johnson's, "The Regal Theater," she playing Dinah Washinton, and Tammy Terell, and sharing the role of Claudette Robinson with Sherry Scott. During the run, she became one of the Regalettes after jumping in unrehearsed for one of the dancers in the show, choreographed by Najwa I. This led to the versatile performer joining the Najwa Dance Corps. She has returned to support and perform for both dance company and ETA.

SAG Elections May Decide Merger Equity

A Message From Esai Morales, William Mapother, Scott Bakula, Valerie Harper, George Coe and David Jolliffe: Every day, SAG members from Hollywood are asking questions about merger. Our answer, 'Let's make sure a merger benefits all Screen Actor's Guild members.' The usual response from the ruling majority of the SAG board?: “We’ll deal with that once merger happens.” Is that answer good enough? We don’t think so. Therefore, we’ll demand that before you’re asked to vote on merger, SAG answer your questions about a merged union. For example:

-Will the pension and health plans of the new union be as strong as SAG’s are now?
-Will the new union require its members to work ONLY union jobs (Global Rule 1) as SAG does now?
-Will actors have the majority vote regarding their own interests like SAG does now?
-Will the new union have requirements for membership as SAG does now?
-Will the facts, both PRO and CON, be included in the merger referendum sent to members for a vote?
The current SAG leadership believes that CERTAIN issues don’t need to be resolved before you vote on merger... Creating a merger plan behind CLOSED doors with AFTRA is unacceptable... SAG members must know the whole truth about a merger plan before being asked to vote... T'Keyah Goes Back-to-School

On Friday, September 23, 2011, T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh will speak at her alma mater, St. Sabina Academy as part of the 2nd Annual Back To School With The HistoryMakers event. The HistoryMakers is a nonprofit organization and the producers of the nation's largest African American oral history video archive. For the event, 500 HistoryMakers will visit schools in nearly 109 cities and 35 states across the country to recount their own school experiences and the struggles they encountered on their paths to success. The HistoryMakers Founder and Executive Director, Julieanna Richardson, says, "By bringing these living legends into the schools, we are raising awareness about the achievements of the accomplished African Americans in local communities and bringing these leaders into schools to see things firsthand."

This year's participants include Senior Advisor to President Obama Valarie Jarrett, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, former Ambassador Andrew Young, singer/actress Melba Moore, Broadway choreographer George Faison, poet Nikki Giovanni, actress T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh (In Living Color, Cosby) and poet/author Sonia Sanchez. AFRI-WARE'S New Move!

Last month, Nzingha Nommo packed up and moved her beloved bookstore to it's new home at 440 S. Ridgeland Ave. A staple in Oak Park, IL since 1993, Afri-Ware is more of a cultural center than a bookstore. Capturing the FAMU Mystique

Last month, Florida A&M University (FAMU) Department of Athletics introduced a groundbreaking multi-media event. "The Mystique" is a web-based miniseries of eight short videos that present a unique perspective to the history of the special athletes, coaches and administrators of FAMU's athletics department. FAMU Director of Athletics Derek Horne said, "I think the Mystique series will give us the opportunity to expose our rich tradition to the younger generation to see why we are so proud of FAMU athletics." Because it would be impossible to capture all of the history in eight short videos, the initial release of "The Mystique" is designed to provide a snapshot of some of the greatest athletes and moments in FAMU history. June's entries were: The Frazier/Galimore Express (1956); Andre "The Hawk" Dawson; 1984 Women's Track All-Americans (pictured) - Pam Porter, Pam Oliver, Vogel Newsome, Mary (Jones) Wellens; and tennis great Althea Gibson. Joyce Headlines Aurora Festival

TV Star Ella Joyce (Roc / My Wife & Kids) headlines the 4th Annual Aurora Jacksonville Black Arts Festival, July 22-24, 2011. Joyce captures the famous moment in the life of Rosa Parks, affectionately called "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement", in her highly acclaimed, one-woman play A Rose Among Thorns, a Tribute to Rosa Parks; Created and Performed by ELLA JOYCE and Directed by Dan Martin.

Safety Series Part II: Things Your Burglar Doesn't Want You to Know

The following information was shared by seasoned burglars in a police sponsored anti-crime seminar. Their habits may encourage you to change yours: The best deterrents for a burglar are: 1. Windows and doors locked 2. Windows that have the catch that keeps them from opening all the way 3. Deadbolts, steel doors with a steel frame or a solid wood door with a wooden frame – the doors need to be installed with 2 ½ inch screws into the studs for these doors to be effective, shorter screws or a steel door with a wood frame and they would just kick the door in, cameras and motion-detector lights that are installed in proper places (front and back doors) and are up high enough that a tall person can’t reach them to angle them up and away and come back later. 4. The number one deterrent, however, is “NOSY NEIGHBORS” – those who are paying attention, looking out the window, hanging around outside and CALLING POLICE FOR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS OR OUT OF PLACE!

Things that aren’t deterrents: 1. Dogs – they aren’t trained to protect the house, only the people who live there. 2. One man said he spent one burglary playing fetch with a dog as he went from room to room getting what he wanted! 3. Alarms aren’t necessarily a deterrent because they often aren’t turned on and it also takes a while for the alarm company to call the house, then summon the police. 4. In that amount of time, the burglars can get in, get something and get out. 5. They also said that everyone has something to steal. They always walked out with something. 6. Keep your valuables in a safe and any keys in a safe or a lock box bolted to the wall. 7. One man took the car keys off the hook by the door and stole the car out of the garage. 8. Window air conditioners should be in a steel cage that is mounted to the mortar outside the windows. 9. It is also good to vary your routine by using all the entrances to your home to leave and return. 10. No system is completely burglar proof, if they are desperate enough (especially if they are on drugs), they will find some way in. 11. However, the harder you make it for them, the more likely they are to move on to another house.

Founded in 1989 by Larry Leon Hamlin, and produced by the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, the National Black Theatre Festival attracts close to 60,000 people to Winston-Salem and the city welcomes festival visitors with open arms.

T'Keyah Speaks at Chicago's HRDI

T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh will visit Human Resources Development Institute, Inc. (HRDI) during her June trip to the windy city. HRDI is one of the largest behavioral healthcare agencies in the United States. The organization provides services in alcohol and substance abuse prevention and treatment, mental health, youth prevention, family services, community health, case management, alternative youth education, HIV/AIDS prevention and education, corrective services, and gambling prevention and education. Joel K. Johnson, M.Ed., HRDI's newly appointed President and CEO, invited Keymáh to visit the adolescent girls residential treatment program where she will share a meal and speak with the participants before touring the HRDI facilities.

They did not enter the homes with a weapon (but would steal weapons, if found) and aimed to enter homes when no one was there. 2. They would look for neighborhoods where neighbors don’t know each other. 3. They looked for an open door or window and will enter through the front or the back. 4. They would usually ring the bell or knock to find out if someone was home. 5. If someone was home, they would make up a story & leave quickly. 6. If the person didn’t watch them walk away, they might go to the next house. 7. One said he would walk with a rake, shovel or lawn mower in case someone answered. 8. They could be in and out of the house in under 10 minutes. 9. The first stop was always the master bedroom where most valuable are kept. 10. They weren’t “fooled” by things hidden in an underwear drawer. 11. Most valuables are kept in the master bedroom. 12. Second stop was the office/computer room or kitchen. 13. They would look for blank checks, social security numbers, inactivated credit cards and unlocked laptops. 14. They would take one or two checks from the middle or back of the book, which they could sell to someone else for identity theft. 15. One said if he also got the person’s ID, he would go to another bank and deposit a check with cash back up to $1000 in the drive-thru. 16. The kitchen junk drawer often has similar items thrown in there. 17. Bottom line: Get Know Your Neighbors and Watch Out For Each Other / Lock Your Doors and Windows / Lock Valuables Including Checks. The more inconvenient you make accessing your valuables, the less likely likely the burgla- More next month.

Festival Favorite's Theatrical Release

Bahamian filmmaker Kareem Mortimer's Children of God premiered theatrically last month at the Quad Cinemas in New York. The film stars Johnny Ferro, Stephen Tyrone Williams, Margaret Laurena Kemp and Van Brown. Awards and recognitions for project include Best Film at NEWFEST Film Festival, New York, Lesgaicinemad, Italy and T&T Film Festival, Trinidad and Tobago.

The gorgeous beaches and towns of the Bahamas are the setting for Children of God, a strong and tender romantic drama from first-time filmmaker Kareem Mortimer. By all accounts, the Habitat for Humanity San Fernando / Santa Clarita Valleys (SF/SCV) Women's Empowerment (WE) Build was a huge success. Chairperson T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh welcomed more than seven hundred volunteers over during the two day event May 14th and 15th, 2011 during which women worked together painting, planting, sawing, nailing, drilling, siding, building fences and building friendships. Special Guest Speaker Army Brigade Commander Colonel Lisa Costanza inspired the crowd on Saturday and Sunday's volunteers were entertained by the adorable dancers from Ballet Folklorico Las Estrellas.

In Pacoima, only 43% of high school students graduate, but in Habitat’s Enriched Neighborhoods, every child has graduated high school and 92% of them are attending or have graduated from college or trade school.

University President Dr. James H. Ammons conferred upon the famous alum, the Doctorate of Humane Letters at the school’s spring commencement, citing her career accomplishments and her charitable and philanthropic endeavors. Ever since she heard President Jimmy Carter talk about providing homes for working families, T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh intended to join that noble effort. Last summer, when Habitat for Humanity San Fernando / Santa Clarita Valleys (SF/SCV) held their first Women's Empowerment (WE) Build she finally got the chance. Working on Entertainment Industries Council's team, T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh helped to frame a house that is now inhabited by a grateful family! She was so moved by the experience that she offered to serve as Chairperson for the 2011 WE Build on May 14 and 15, 2011. During this year's build teams and individuals will plaster and paint and help build a children’s playground. Check out my interview with LaFern Cusack!

Kemp Goes To Capetown

Margaret Laurena Kemp, who won international acclaim for her portrayal of Lena, in the feature film Children of God (which premieres in New York on May 20), has been invited to lecture and perform for the Mother Tongue Theatre Project in Capetown, South Africa. Follow her journey home as she continues to workshop and perform her brilliant new solo theater piece, A Negro Speaks of Rivers, and as she raises funds for this history trip. Kemp, who earned her MFA in Classical Theatre from the Shakespeare Theatre at The George Washington University in Washington, DC, is a Certified Fitzmaurice Voicework Associate and teaches and coaches voice at University of Southern California, California State University, Fullerton, and privately in Hollywood. She has performed and lectured across the country, in Ireland, Greece and London and will lecture in Barcelona on her way to South Africa. Her television appearances include recurring roles on The Orlando Jones Show and guest appearances on the ABC Television shows In Justice and Commander in Chief. KPFK 90.7 presents the 1st Annual KPFK Hero Award and Tribute Concert - May 1, 2011 at Catalina Bar & Grill, 6725 West Sunset, Hollywood CA. 90028. - VIP reception at 5:30 includes meet and greet with performers and special guests, silent auction and hospitality.  Musical Tribute to Billy Higgins that starts at 7:00 pm.

This event launches the KPFK Hero Award and Tribute as an anuual fundraising event for KPFK. The long overdue celebration of the life and work of Billy Higgins has prompted an out pour from other legendary Jazz icons such as George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Charles Lloyd, Clayton Cameron, Poncho Sanchez, John Beasley, Leon Mobley, Kamau Da’ood, Dwight Trible, Wil Calhoun, Phil Ranelin and special invited guests Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden. John Densmore a founding member of the Doors will also be on hand to present a poem.

The KPFK Hero Award and Tribute is the brain child of Maggie LePique, radio personality and Music Director at KPFK, after a heartfelt on-air discussion with Charles Lloyd about Billy Higgins. This event epitomizes the ideals of KPFK 90.7FM and its commitment to free-thinking, listener-sponsored radio and demonstrates why KPFK is the most powerful of the Pacifica stations and indeed is the most powerful public radio station in the Western United States.

Higgins, from Los Angeles, played on Ornette Coleman's first records, beginning in 1958. He then freelanced extensively with hard bop and other post-bop players, including Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Milt Jackson, Jackie McLean, Pat Metheny, Hank Mobley, Thelonious Monk, Lee Morgan, David Murray, Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Mal Waldron, and Cedar Walton. Keymah's Essential Return to the Hill - Pt I

On Friday, April 1, 2011, Florida A & M University formally acknowledged The T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh Theatre Scholarship with a ceremony at the school's Eternal Flame, culminating in the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the contribution. T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh's
mentor at FAMU, Dr. Ronald O. Davis, served as Master of Ceremonies. Speakers included the Vice President of University Relations, Carla Willis, CRFE who spearheaded the event, Thomas Mitchell, Sr., President of Alumni Affairs, Ralph W. Turner, Ph.D., Dean of the Collage of Arts and Sciences, and Tara Veal, Miss Essential Theatre. Keymáh was in Tallahassee for the FAMU Essential Theatre Reunion which included the unveiling of the newly established Ronald O. Davis Acting Studio in honor of the retired Theatre chair who is credited with saving the departed and declaring it 'essential,' and the naming of the Charles Winterwood Theatre stage in honor of Davis' predecessors, S. Randolph and Irene C. Edmonds.
The non-stop weekend included a rousing Alumni Showcase hosted by Keymáh and Charles Westley Lattimore, featuring actress Eunice Saunders, guitarist / singer Lililita Johnson, actor / playwright James Webb, actress /FAMU Theater professor Marci Stringer and author DChristy Eves. Also in attendance for the festivities were Keymah's former instructors Dr. Beverly Barber, Dr. Keith Tucker, classmates Kevin Brunson, Sevilla Phillips-Brunson, Harum "R.J." Ulmer, FAMU Professor Luther D. Wells, Sharna Amos, and actor Meshach Taylor. On Saturday, April 2, Taylor, Keymáh and Anika Noni Rose were the theater department's 2011 inductees to the College of Arts and Science's Gallery of Distinction. Honorees from the college's other departments are hailed in the Kudos article below.
Following the enshrinement ceremony, Taylor and Keymah joined fellow alum for the Essential Theatre mainstage production of "Ain't Misbehavin," directed and choreographed by Harry Bryce, musical direction by Johnny Williams, set design by Ruben Arana-Downs, costumes by Edith Carnley, lights by C. Bacote Robinson, choreography assisted by Lashawnda Batts, stage managed by Lisa Lauray and starring Marty Lamar, Bryan F. Mitchell, Kimberly Hicks, Chelsea Lee Williams and Amitris Angels Williams.
Keymáh gushed with pride at the performers, especially Chelsea Lee Williams, who played her granddaughter in the 2010 FAMU Lyceum performance of "Crowns," which also featured the gifted Marty Lamar and Lililita Johnson. Seeing the newly renovated theater and Keymáh's bond with the students, Taylor pledged to return to the hill with Keymáh to perform in a fundraiser for her scholarship. What in the World?

A great many shocking revolutionary actions are inspiring people worldwide. From the Tunisian revolution that led to the ousting of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011, the Egyptian revolution that led to the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, the Yemeni protests that will in effect end the reign (and dynasty) of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Libyan uprising, the bloodiest so far, that aims to oust and leader Muammar Gaddafi, and in more than a dozen other protests, countless citizens of North and North East African countries are giving their lives in protest to oppressive regimes, and repressive working and living conditions.

Perhaps it is this global display of righteous indignation that fuels the Wisconsin protests of Governor Scott Walker's plan to slash civil jobs and crush collective bargaining rights for union members and the solidarity protests that have been organized across the country. We sat still when Wall street printed more money for itself, after squandering all of ours.
How long will we sit still while the government pretends now to be 'running out' of money? I know this is an article better suited for my new blog, T'Keyah Fights City Hall, but I strongly encourage you to participate in the governance of your city, state and country, one way, or another.

This issue of The Crystal News is dedicated to: Louise Gordon and Larry Washington. Aunt Louise was the last of a small group of my grandmother's friends who hovered like angels to help my grandparents raise three of my siblings and me. The cat's meow, her great affection for felines was only surpassed by her kindness to humans... I remember peering across the street at those groovy, pastel suits Larry Washington and the other members of "The Brighter Side of Darkness" wore, posing on his front lawn for a photo session as half the neighborhood proudly watched. Last year Larry came to support a project I was directing. He was singing again and we talked about performing together one day... I am still inspired by the first real "star" I ever knew...

Stage Aurora Theatrical Company announces open casting for FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE/ WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF by Ntozake Shange. FOR COLORED GIRLS..., a series of poems, collectively called a "choreopoem," was nominated for a 1977 Tony Award for Best Play.
Seeking females - ages 21 and OVER. Bronzeville Commemorates National Black HIV/AIDS Day w/ Free Testing & Stage Reading

February 7, 2011 marks the 11^th anniversary of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. To commemorate the day, the Bronzeville Community Theatre Company (BCTC) will offer free on-site HIV testing at West Point Baptist Church, 3566 S. Cottage Grove in Chicago for 6-9PM. The evening's activities will also include a play reading of "...so goes a nation" written by N. LaQuis Harkins of Fire,Tears and Ink Productions and "The Court Room" by Oba William King of JustUs Arts & Education. BCTC Founder Keisha Nickole says,

"...Black people still need to communicate and learn more about the effects of this virus and disease." According to a 2008 report by the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, in Illinois alone, of the new reported AIDS cases approximately 49% were are African American. Mahalia Leads ART's 10th Season

Amun Ra Theatre (ART) will open their tenth season with Mahalia, A Gospel Musical, by Tom Stolz, from February 25th - March 13 at ART, this a tribute to the late, great gospel warrior who captivated the nation and audiences around the world with her distinctive soulful voice and effervescent delivery. This production will feature ART favorite Vera Warrick (The Colored Museum, Black Nativity) in the title role. ART's 10th Anniversary season also includes: The Old Settler by John Henry Redwood May 13th - May 29th; Jar The Floor by Cheryl West September 16th - October 2nd; and Ain't Misbehavin' by Fats Waller December 2nd - December 18th. Chicago Filmmakers in the Pan

The works of Chicago filmmakers Darryl Pitts and Mark Harris will be among the selections at and at the 19th Annual Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles February 16-23, 2011. Television reporter Rochelle Ritchie of WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach, FL let her straightened hair go natural, allowing viewers to see her transformation process. "Making the decision to go natural was not an easy one, especially being a black female reporter," Ritchie said.
